Back in Time: The History Behind The Historic
When you walk through the doors of The Historic, you’re not just entering a beautiful event space—you’re stepping into over a century of Chattanooga history. Built in 1904 as St. James Methodist Episcopal Church, this beloved landmark began as a spiritual home for a congregation in the heart of the city. Over the decades, it has transformed in function but retained its architectural charm and enduring presence, making it a true testament to Chattanooga’s history and the lasting value of shared spaces.
A Legacy of Community and Growth
In its early years, The Historic was known as St. James Methodist Episcopal Church, part of the Northern Methodist movement in Chattanooga. According to Jon Shearer’s Chattanoogan article, St. James had a strong presence on Rossville Avenue, featuring elements like a welcoming tower and arched breezeway that still draw visitors today.
New Beginnings and Meaningful Connections
After St. James Methodist’s relocation, the building welcomed a new chapter as the home of New Hope Baptist Church through the 1950s and ’70s. While the congregation eventually moved on, the structure remained, continuing to serve the community and maintaining its architectural and historical significance as a part of Chattanooga’s urban landscape.
From Church to Celebration Hub
In 2012, our building underwent a major transformation, becoming an event venue known as The Church on Main. With renovations that retained the original hardwood floors, high wood beams, and vaulted ceilings, The Church on Main quickly became a sought-after venue for weddings, galas, and gatherings. As noted in The Chattanoogan, the combination of exposed brick, warm wood, and spacious interiors created an ambiance that bridged the classic with the contemporary. For over a decade, couples and families celebrated life’s milestones in our beloved space, bringing new joy and laughter to our historic walls.
In 2023, we were reintroduced as The Historic, with a renewed mission to honor our legacy while creating even more memorable events. Under the direction of the current owners, we not only offer an inviting main venue that can host up to 250 guests but also feature a new speakeasy, Temperance, located in the basement. This intimate space is perfect for smaller gatherings, adding a unique twist to our offerings.
